that day when you realize you need to take your own advice.

Yesterday my [now 16 year old] niece had one of those super dramatic teenager kind of days.  Who was it between? Her and one of her good g/f's.  What was it over? a boy.
 Go figure.

I proceeded to give her my advice.  You know...because I'm a cool/hip aunt and everyone seems to come to me for advice even though I probably don't always know what I'm talking about.

My advice--

1.) Never let a guy come between a solid friendship.
2.) Don't fall for dumb boys.
3.) Boys are easier to get along with than girls. Find a good guy friend(s).
     Keep him as a FRIEND.
4.) Stick with boys... less drama.

**and most importantly***
5.) Never, under any circumstances, talk crap about the frenemy to a mutual friend unless it's something you wouldn't mind saying to their face or something you don't mind them hearing about within the hour.  They will tell. I would. I mean, wouldn't you? ..exactly.

As I was telling her about all of the things that she should/shouldn't do today at school, I couldn't help but think about how life doesn't really stop getting dramatic as you get older. In fact, I think it gets worse. Girls still let boys come between friendships, people still get offended over the DUMBEST things, boys are still easier to be friends with, adults still have frenemies, and they still talk crap....

I guess the only thing that changes with drama as we get older is that we are a little bit smarter when it comes to seeing things in the long run and deciphering the things that are truly classified as dramatic and important (sometimes) and we're just better and dealing with it because high school and college made us so profesh.  Oh, and let's not forget that we're better at the crap-talking too.

Pretty sad that my 24-year-old self had relative/dramatic life experiences to share and that my advice I gave her still holds true to my current life right now.  I'm just glad I don't have to worry about who I'm going to sit with at lunch anymore when drama goes down.

Yikes.
Thank goodness my niece didn't come back at {so and so}with some of the AWFUL names and comebacks that immediately entered mind as she told me about yesterday's story.

Here's to standing up for yourself when you need too, learning how to take care of the stuff that's important and brushing off the stuff that isn't :)
oh, and for the guy friends who help you cope with some of the dumb girls.
